The Transfer market kicked into its usual unpredictable madness yesterday when Sunderland striker, Darren Bent handed in a transfer request in the wake of a mega offer from Aston Villa.
Instead of hoping that Gerard Houllier and his mates will make it through, Randy Lerner, the owner of Villa decided to ask him to identify a star performer. Houllier has picked up Bent for this task.
The 18million plus offer for England striker Bent is an immense display of support from the clubs American owner towards the man he appointed to replace Marin O'Neill in September. The bid for Bent comes just days after Villa completed the signing of Cameroon international midfielder Jean Makoun from Lyon for 6million. The club have also bid for Blackpool star Charlie Adam who is seen as an integral part of Blackpool's impressive Premier League debut.
Villa seems to be shopping with complete attention apparently since before this huge bid for Bent, not so long ago, Villa finished signing the deed to gain international Cameroon start, Jean Makoun who used to play for Lyon. Makoun was paid 6 million. It is said that the club has also put forth a bid for Charlie Adam the Blackpool star and the main reason behind Blackpool's awesome debut into Premier League.
If all these transfers go through successfully, Houllier would be quite relieved, with a great burden off his back. It will also indicate to the Villa fans the club knows and believes in the manager, that the fight is yet to be fought and things can be worked out in Villa's favour. Houllier has not had a moment's peace since his joining last September. The worse part was his team was able to score only three wins out of 18 League games. Not only that, they lost control and the game to their nemesis Birmingham City in the Carling Cup quarter finals.
Even when his big names have been fit, the biggest problem for the Frenchman has been scoring goals, emphasised by the records of his three most senior strikers. Only Emile Heskey has been able to find the back of the nest in the Premier League this campaign, while England international Gabby Agbonlahor and John Carew have failed to score at all in league games. It is no wonder then that the Villains are willing to pay a premium price for one of the best goal scorers in the Premier League as they seek to remain a top flight team.
Houllier is worried about goals and strikers for Premier League. Emile Heskey was able to come in with a narrow margin but Gabby Agbonlahor and John Carew failed to make the grades with zero score in the League games. No surprise then that Aston Villa is ready to shell cash and grasp best goal scorer for Premier League, seeing that they would need one if they wanted to come to the top.
The most astonishing is the fact that Darren Bent left Sunderland who is on the 6th rank in the League and seems to be going ahead for qualifying for the European Football in 2011 to join not going anywhere Aston Villa. Money could be one of the reasons but it is hardly likely that he will be paid any more wages than already committed. Whatever the reason may be, it is true that Darren Bent's 10 month stint with Sunderland is at an end. In other transfer news, Steven Pienaar is close to exiting Goodison Park with Everton agreeing for a fee with Tottenham Hotspur. Time will tell if he joins Spurs or Chelsea
