Getting To Know The Duties Of A Court Reporter

The court reporter acts as the eyes and ears of the presiding judge. He also undertakes outdoor jobs for the judge.

There will be a few people unable to attend the court for recording their statements. The court reporter is assigned the job of visiting such people and records their statements. Travelling is routine in their work. When they visit a site on the court's orders they document the happenings there and present them to the court for whatever action that may be necessary.

The job includes marking of exhibits, documents, etc; and the counsel apart from the recording, transcribing etc. It is essential therefore this person should be very familiar with legal terms etc. he should be also up to do date of the case being tried.

Paper work and administrative duties form the major part of a court reporter's job. Accuracy in recording the proceedings and hearings is of utmost importance. Swearing in of witnesses is another job for the court reporter.

Providing secretarial services for the judge is sometimes an additional work given to the court reporter. Coordination of all activities with the clerk of the court is a routine function. He also acts as a bridge between the sitting judge and legal community, public and others.

To be precise, the court reporter works as a jack of all trades. He ensures that there communication system remains good.

The responsibilities of the court reporter are very extensive. There is need to get good acquaintance with essential legal matters. As the pressure on his work will be immense, he has to learn to deal with it with poise.

Speed and accuracy are the essential requirements of the job. Everything has to come right, without a second chance.
