We've all learned things about information that turns out not to be true, health and fitness facts and myths are no different really. Myths are born when we hear something about a good tip even if we don't have the whole story and we go and tell the next person. Maybe they even didn't hear it right. But they innocently tell something they know, and another myth is born, again.
PAUSE FOR RANT - For those that think that HIIT cardio isn't the best form of cardio and that its effectiveness is merely a myth you are dead wrong. Studies prove that HIIT cardio and HIIT workouts are incredibly effective at both fat burning (and consequently weight loss) and cardiovascular improvements... I just had to air that out because although HIIT cardio is much more mainstream nowadays than it was in the past it still seems to get overlooked quite often and the people that attempt to disprove its effectiveness can never seem to point to any significant scientific findings that disprove its effectiveness. So when in doubt do HIIT! - END OF RANT

There is a particular fitness myth that concerns treadmill workouts and the knees. Some believe that running on a treadmill is easier on your knees than running on a hard surface outdoors. No way, running in general is harsh on the knees no matter what the surface. When you choose running or jogging as your exercise of choice you are putting your knees at risk since your weight is forced on them. Surface has nothing to do with it.
No pain, no gain. That's the only way to do it and get great results. Dangerously incorrect is what that statement really is. In addition, there is very real potential for inflicting serious bodily damage by living that particular motto. The pain of a good workout should not inhibit your other activities. If you experience pain after a workout that doesn't go away or only appears to be getting worse, stop doing the activity. You will only cause yourself more complications by continuing an exercise that is causing you pain.
