The Challenges Of Being A Lifeguard

Have you ever considered becoming a lifeguard? It looks like fun, right? You get to hang out at the beach or pool all day, get a sun tan and while away the afternoon, right? Well, don't be fooled by appearances. It's not that easy to become a lifeguard and it can be surprisingly challenging.

Once you put on your red bathing suit and climb on to the lifeguard's chair, it's up to you to keep everyone in the pool safe. The swimmers are depending on you to rescue them in case of an emergency. And it's your job to make sure everyone is following the rules.

If a swimmer is having difficulty, it's up to you to notice and immediately jump in the water to rescue him or her. You have to use the life-saving techniques that you were taught to pull the victim to safety. You're their last defense against drowning. If you forget your training or perform it improperly you could face penalties.

It may not seem important but you should always stay on top of the chlorine levels in the pool. Did you know that chlorine levels can decrease by 1ppm each hour in hot weather? So, it's essential that you check the chemical levels about every hour.

You should also be careful not to get too comfortable in your lifeguard chair, because you don't want to fall asleep. Get up periodically and move around. Do some stretches to make sure are alert.

It's important to be sure to get plenty of rest and eight right when you're a lifeguard. You don't want to get tired during your shift and be unable to save someone who needs your help.

Be a strict about the rules. They are created for a reason, so if you see someone breaking them blow your whistle. Give them one warning and if they continue to break the rules make them get out of the pool.

Before you start your shift, check the first aid kit to make sure it has everything you might need.
