Alternatives to Vasectomy Reversal

By Seomul Evans

Vasectomy reversal refers to a surgical procedure which is performed in order to reverse the effects of vasectomy. During the procedure, the previously severed vasa deferentia are revived. There are two types of vasectomy reversal methods. One is called vasovasostomy in which vasa deferentia are connected to deferentia , whereas the other is called vasoepididymostomy in which epididymis is connected to vasa deferentia.

Although vasectomy reversal is the most convenient way to patency and pregnancy, there are available alternatives for this procedure. Because the success rate is not absolute (since it is highly dependent on many things like the skill of the surgeon, span of years between procedures, etc), some men who failed at the first try of vasectomy reversal procedure may opt to try other alternatives that might work for them before they give the procedure another try.

Many people also opt to look for alternatives to vasectomy reversal because the surgery itself is quite expensive, and the recovery process would take about an average of four months to one year. There is also a possibility to have complications, and the success rate is not always sure. There are many alternatives to vasectomy reversal, and for people who do not want to undergo surgery, this might be best for them. Many of these alternative solutions are associated with high success rates as well.

Sperm Banking. Before vasectomy procedures, many people would be given the option to store some of their sperm in case you want to conceive. It can be stored in a special facility, and you would just have to pay for the storage and maintenance, which is generally a low cost. You may then undergo IVF or in vitro fertilization, and conceive a baby. The drawback though is that this is only possible if the sperm banking has been done before the vasectomy procedure.

Therapeutic Donor Insemination-If the couple is ready to have sperm from donors, they can select one to conceive a child. In this situation, the women will be artificially inseminated, however, the success rate is quite low within the rate of 5 to 25%.

Sperm Aspiration-Sperm aspiration is the process of acquiring the sperm from a man who has had a vasectomy before. This is a non surgical procedure, therefore, many people go for this procedure when they cannot qualify for the two previous alternatives discussed above.

Of course as with any procedure, there is no guarantee that these would work one hundred percent to the patient's advantage. The key here is to look for solutions or alternatives that would best suit you. You have to factor in budget, time constraints, availability of sperm in sperm bank, etc. Many men also opt to not get vasectomy reversal because of the gap between the time of the vasectomy and the reversal, which only means that the longer it takes, the lower the success rate would be.

There are many alternatives to vasectomy reversal and the people who don't feel like undergoing this type of procedure or surgery can avail other options too, and they might be best for them. And the positive sign is that these alternatives are associated with high success rate also.
