Vasectomy Reversal: A Great Landmark for People Who Had Vasectomy

By Seomul Evans

People who don't like to produce children go for a vasectomy. In this procedure, the vasa deferentia are severed and sealed in such a manner to prevent ejaculation. The sperm's way is blocked, as a result, there would be no way for reproduction. Usually a vasectomy procedure takes about 30 minutes to an hour and done in the surgeon's clinic. It is a fairly simple procedure.

Now, vasectomy reversal, from the words themselves, refers to surgical procedure trying to reverse the effects of vasectomy. In this procedure, the surgeon will try to reconnect and align the vasa deferentia so the streamline for the sperm would be open again. Previously, vasectomy has a permanent effect, but with the advances in technology, there has been considerable success from vasectomy reversal procedures.

Since the procedure has not been around for so long (about three decades or less, which is considerably short in the medicine field), some people doubt the success rate of vasectomy reversal. However, with the onset of modern technology, it is becoming more and more possible to guarantee a one hundred percent success rate of a vasectomy reversal.

There are two types of vasectomy reversal procedures. One is called a vasovasostomy and the other is called vasoepididymostomy. As far as vasovasostomy, in this procedure, vasa deferentia is connected to vasa deferentia, however, in the vasoepididymostmy, epididymis is connected to vasa defertia. As regards success rates, it can be taken in two different angles - patency and pregnancy. Patency refers to the smooth flow of the sperm, while pregnancy refers to the ability to reproduce through the mother's womb.

The success rate of a vasectomy reversal procedure would depend on three things - the vasectomy reversal technique used, the years between the vasectomy and the vasectomy reversal technique, and of course the skill and experience of the surgeon who would be doing the reversal procedure.

According to recent research studies, 95% of men who had vasovasostomy procedure would be able to ejaculate within a period of one year and so about 65% pregnancy rate is possible. As regards the success rate of vasoepididymostomy, it is significantly lower, with only about 65% of patency rate and 40% pregnancy rate.

The years in between the surgical procedure is an important factor in determining the success rate of the vasectomy reversal procedure. If it is availed under three years, there is about 100% success rate in patency. If we delay, then the success rate in patency will lower. Thus, the sooner we have this procedure, the batter. With the vasectomy reversal procedure, the body is expected to ejaculate starting from about 4 months to a period of one year.

The doctor is also one of the most important factors of the procedure. In fact, the surgeon would highly determine the success rate since it is up to his skill to do the procedure right. The surgeon must be highly skilled, as a vasectomy reversal procedure could fail. The procedure can be repeated, but of course, it is better to do it just once. Research on the doctor, or ask for referrals from people who had the same procedure. If you trust the surgeon who did the vasectomy procedure on you, you can also opt to take him as the surgeon for the vasectomy reversal procedure.
