I Am Glad Whenever I See Someone Having A Prostate Cancer Ribbon

By Melvin R. Quigley

I have seen tons of pink ribbons over the years, and I have always been a big supporter of breast cancer awareness, but I have not seen very many blue ribbons which are the prostate cancer ribbon. I actually didn't even know that there was such a thing until one day as I was strolling out to the mailbox, I saw my neighbor Max wearing a blue ribbon and I asked him what in the world the blue ribbon meant.

He told me that it was for prostate cancer awareness and that he was wearing it in support of his father-in-law, who had recently been diagnosed with the disease and was undergoing some fairly extensive therapy. Well, I felt like a total idiot for not been more aware of something that millions of men struggle with and I asked him where I could get a ribbon for myself in order to show my support for awareness.

He told me that he actually had many of the prostate cancer ribbon in his house, so he graciously gave me the one he was wearing so that I could start wearing it straight away. And I did exactly that, which actually encouraged a lot of conversations with my co-workers, both male and female about prostate cancer and how it had been an influence on the lives of far more people than I had realized.

A lot of the people that I had conversations with were actually pretty affected by the talks that we had and several of them decided to do more to raise awareness and to show some support to those suffering from this disease. It was even suggested that we, as an office, do something during September, which as it turns out, is prostate cancer awareness month, another fact that I kicked myself for not knowing.

We actually even got a lot of support from the office management and they agreed that we could even have a half hour awareness conference at the beginning of September during which we could have an expert or cancer survivor speak to us and answer any questions that we may have. Some of my co-workers also approached me and told me they would like to wear a ribbon, and wanted to know where they could get one, but first I had to ask my neighbor where he had bought his. He grinned as I told him about my experience at work and told me that he was glad that people out there were learning about something so important.
