Prevention and Remedies For Yeast Infection on Skin

By Sharon Kleinbaum

Candidiasis is a very common type of yeast infection on skin. The infection occurs via the Candida fungus, which is natural on human skin. However, The Candida yeast only occasionally spreads and causes infection.

Inflammatory skins diseases like eczema can also cause these infections, this is because it causes the skin to weaken. Humid weather is another cause, and wearing tight clothing can also produce infections. The over use of anti-biotic medication can also cause the production of too much Candida, which may spread and infect other parts of the body. There are many different types of Candida yeast infections.

Peri-eche is a softening of the skin around the mouth; this produces deep creases and white patches. Thrush is very common and affects the mouth and throat with white patches. This is more common with those who suffer from Diabetes and HIV.

Interigo forms in the folds of the body in warm areas, such as the groin, breasts and under the arms. Excessive sweating or using antibiotics usually causes candidal body rash. Candidal vulvovaginitis is a yeast infection that occurs in the vagina and can cause itchiness, redness and burning sensations.

Yeast infections usually form in warm and moist body areas. The skin usually blocks the yeast naturally but cuts or weakened skin can allow the infection. Most of the time yeast infections do not require any medical assistance, and there are plenty of over-the-counter lotions and creams available.

Clotrimazole lotion or cream can be used to treat a superficial skin infection, quickly and easily. This is usually the infection between fingers and toes. Perleche is best treated with topical anti-fungal cream, and often along with a mild corticosteroid cream. Try to avoid licking the corners of the mouth; petroleum jelly is well worth applying after the cream. Interigo can be treated with a topical anti-fungus agent, it is also beneficial to use nystatin powder as this contains an anti yeasting agent.

For serious infections medical assistance may be required and medication prescribed. Azole medication blocks the body's production of ergosterol, which kills the yeast cells. This does not harm any human cells. Polyene anti-fungal medication includes nystatin and Amphotericin B, these work by attaching themselves to the cells walls, which contains ergosterol, creating holes where the yeast cells leak, causing them to die.

These infections can be prevented by not allowing the body to get too moist, a talcum powder applied to certain areas of the body will soak up sweat and keep the area dry. Regular washing will also help as well as keeping health by doing regular exercise and having a good diet. Alcohol should also be avoided as this can trigger infection. Avoid allowing the body to get too moist, wearing loose underwear can also prevent certain parts of the body from getting too hot and cause perspiration.

If the over-the-counter creams and locations do not heal the yeast infection on skin, a doctor should be consulted. They will be able to prescribe medication and give helpful advice. These infections can be very uncomfortable and will get worse if left untreated.
