Indications You Might Be Addicted

By Vanessa Summer

The remark "addiction" is extremely overused by the majority of society. Individuals have alleged that any hankering, for anything from a beloved movie genre to a popular food, is something they're "addicted" to. Genuine addiction, though, is more insidious than the mainstream "jonesing" feeling that you get for the things you are passionate about. But certain objects or substances that aren't typically destructive may in reality be the objects of "addictions." There can genuinely be common objects that inspire genuine addiction in some individuals. How can you judge when you suffer from a authentic addiction, not just a robust need? Here are some of the symbols that you may be addicted.

Do you find you want more of what you desire to make you feel the same? Possibly you used to need just one espresso or latte to make you move in the morning. However at this time you don't feel well until you've had at least two or three. This is the mark of addiction. We are losing restraint when it calls for more and more of a substance to generate the same effect in us. Often addiction might be documented early and definitively by this occurrence.

Do you try to hide your supplies of the stuff you desire? This is something that a lot of people who become addicted to drugs and alcohol will do. They keep hidden their supplies in unknown spots in their places of work or homes because they want privacy and know that they've become too obvious in their usage. When you strive to keep individuals from knowing what you're ingesting by hiding your supplies from view, be aware that you may be getting addicted. Keep in mind, however, that concealing a bag of chocolate from someone because you just need your fair share of it is different than stashing chocolate all over your house and telling people that you do not eat it any more.

Do you take or use your chosen substance more regularly than you let on to other people? It's not uncommon for alcoholics to meet people for cocktails or beers only after having a few at home on their own. This way their associates need not believe they're necessarily drinking excessively, but they can actually have much more than is obvious. Or it can be possible that subsequent to drinking with acquaintances they'll keep going on their own in private. This kind of lying and hiding of your behavior is a sign that you know what you are doing is wrong. Do not ignore the manner that makes you feel.

The objects of addiction can be unusual to the point that they may be difficult to recognize. We could become addicted to things like shopping, working out and eating just as easily as we may become addicted to drugs or alcohol. If you have started to lie about your behavior, keep hidden your behavior or if it uses a lot more of the certain thing or activity to help you feel happy, these are characteristics that you should start looking for help in getting better. Just about anything is fine in moderation--it is when that something takes over other parts of our lives that we run into trouble.

Don't hesitate to notify a friend or trusted analyst and ask for help if you're concerned that you may be an addict. You can regain power of your own future and leave your dependence behind.
