Yeast Infection Treatment And Preventative Tips

By Brad Chappel

Having yeast infections can be both uncomfortable and inconvenient. Understanding the causes of these infections will make yeast infection treatment more simple and efficient.

The cause of such infections is an overproduction of bacteria that is naturally found in the body (Candida albicans), generally in vaginal cavities although oral cavities can fall victim to these types of infections too. The best treatments for such infections are preventative measures that will stop the infections from occurring in the first place.

A moist environment serves as a breeding ground for Candida albicans. Thus, it is important to keep the vaginal area as dry as possible. This means thoroughly wiping the vaginal area after showering or swimming. Wearing tight clothing can also lead to an infection since the tight and dark environment traps moisture in the vaginal area. Additionally, wearing cotton underwear versus those made from a synthetic material allows the vaginal area to breathe so moisture does not get trapped in that area.

Disturbing the normal pH balance of the vagina is yet another element contributing to infections. Using scented tampons or pads, douches, and taking antibiotics can all throw the pH balance out of whack. Additionally, bubble baths and scented soaps, bath salts, and feminine deodorants or sprays can all have the same effect. Avoiding these elements greatly reduces susceptibility to infections.

Using proper sanitary techniques will aid in infection prevention as well. After using the bathroom, wiping should be done in a front to back manner to prevent rectal waste from coming into contact with the vagina. Frequent changing of unscented tampons and pads will also help eliminate the build-up of moisture.

Taking these preventative measures will not only treat the symptoms of these infections but also the causes, making for an overall healthier and happier person.
