The Things Which Snorers Undergo

By Alma Hnanguie

Don't laugh. There's a secret shame attached to snoring. Yes, we've heard it all before, the well-meant, all-in-good-fun ribbing a snorer undergoes when the sound of their nighttime humming is exposed to everyone. A lot of snorers brush it off and laugh together with them, although not all can.

For sure, a lot of us must have known a dad who has been ridiculed about his nightly chainsaw orchestra, or maybe a husband about the "unsexiness" of his lip-flapping whistling breath and survive it with good humor, but what with the other people?

Have you considered those who snore so loudly that they're frightened they'll be observed by people in the adjacent room; who then just opt to live alone, object to travel, or deal with any situation where they'll have to share a living area with others-even for short stays-for fear of being discovered as a snorer and made fun of. You can also find the college age kids, afraid that their evening snores will travel down the dorm corridor, try to muffle the noise with cushions. Not only are these situations not humorous, they can pose physical and emotional health threats.

The most difficult aspect of this shame some sense about their snoring is the fact that, often, these snorers decline to look for solutions. When at times, all they may need are pretty straight forward lifestyle adjustments like getting some workout, or by using a stop snoring mouthpiece, or modifying the medication.

For most, snoring might reveal a deeper, more dangerous health issue that is being intentionally reserved because of the embarrassment or shame they've associated with being found out or labeled as a snorer.

So, next time you come across a snorer, whether a relative or a friend, try to measure his feelings regarding the subject. Just take your cue from them. Should they feel embarrassment over it, take notice and be sensitive. If they can laugh about this, then perhaps you can treat it with a bit of humor. Most importantly, inspire them to look for a solution, be it in the form of snoring aids just like a snoring mouthpiece, or healthy lifestyle changes, or by visiting the doctor.
