I know you have seen or knew people that have serious medical conditions that call for medical care and you may even feel bad for them. It might of course actually be simply something in your home that is making it difficult to get to sleep. Something else entirely that has helped many people is to have a banana in the evening, as bananas contain melatonin which is really a sleep aid. If you are a major coffee drinker, you will have to make some changes simply because the level of caffeine you are ingesting could be keeping you awake. Try herbal and fruit drinks as an alternative especially late at night.

Many men and women have a lot of stress they need to deal with and if your consumed with stress before going to be this is going to make it tougher to get to sleep. When you're anxious a lot you might have a bit of an anxiety issue that has to be dealt with. Something that has helped thousands of people is finding ways to turn off their minds before going to bed. Your brain is an extremely powerful tool and if you believe that you won't be capable of getting to sleep you might be convincing your mind of that at that could be what is keeping you up. Aromatherapy, sound therapy not to mention meditation are a few things you could try if you find that stress and anxiety might be your issue.
