Natural Skin Products for Razor Bumps

By Kathy Roberts

The next time you go by a newsstand take a good look at the spread of magazines and you'll notice that most skin care topics are aimed towards women, but what about men? Men have skin problems as well, but sometimes the skin care industry just passes them by.

What we have to keep in mind is that skin care isn't just about how pretty or attractive we look, but about how healthy our skin is. This is the root of all skin care products because without healthy skin our body becomes vulnerable and prey to infection and disease.

So, as you can tell, skin care is a vital part of our survival no matter if you are a man or a woman.

Skin Problems: The Main Problems Plaguing Men

Men have the same issues as women: aging skin and skin renewal, acne scars and dull skin. But there is an issue that seems to burden men more acutely than women, ingrown hairs. This happens to most men because they shave on a daily basis, sometimes even twice a day, which means that they will be more prone to developing either razor burn or razor bumps, or both.

Improper shaving techniques and curly hair are the main causes of ingrown hairs. Althoug it is not possible to change the texture of your hair, you can learn the proper shaving technique to avoid razor bumps.

Implementing The Proper Shaving Techniques to Avoid Ingrown Hairs

Forgetting to prepare your skin before shaving is probably one of the biggest mistakes you can make. It may be tempting to splash on some water and hurry through the shaving process especially if you are running late. But, this is a surefire way to get ingrown hairs and razor burn.

The Proper Technique

The first thing you must do is use a product (foam or gel) to soften your skin and hair. Second, use a new razor. Most men aren't in the habit of using a new razor with every shave. This is a good practice to acquire because the use of old worn out razors only produces an improper cut and possible razor burn and ingrown hairs.

Another important step is to take your time shaving. If you don't take your time, you might end up cutting yourself or missing some of the hairs. Once you've finished shaving don't forget to apply a soothing after shave product.

These tips will help men avoid razor burn and ingrown hairs, however, this isn't a surefire bet. In fact, you may still be getting the occasional ingrown hair or suffering from skin burns. If this is your experience then proceed with a gentle touch.

Even though ingrown hairs are not dangerous, they can weaken your skin and it could lead to minor infections. The best form of treatment is the use of a gentle exfoliating product that can help you gently break the skin and release the hair shaft.

You can either use natural skin products or a scrub to exfoliate your skin. If you decide to use a scrub, you need to be gentile so that you don't damage your skin.

Chemical exfoliants are also a good choice especially if you have sensitive skin. These types of products promote the exfoliation process by breaking apart the bond between skin cells. Common chemical exfoliants include salicylic acid and AHAs.
