The Concept 2 Rower - A Review of Special Features

By Yoko Polan

We all first became aware of Concept 2 rower exercise machines back in the early 1980s. The snowfall in Vermont, where Concept 2 rowing machines are made, caused this company to begin producing them in response to the harsh elements. That was the driving thought to create a means by which rowers would not have to wait for warm temperatures to participate their sport. From the get-go, this company aimed to include the best engineering and technology available in their rowing exercise machines. As an actual user of their rowing machines, I can attest to the fact that their machines perform well. I will provide details concerning the more important qualities of this exercise equipment.

There are two models of its rowing workout machine available, the Model D and E. If you wish to spend less, then the Model D is what you want to get. EveryEvery last machine comes standard with a performance monitor of which there are two types, the PM3 and PM4. The PM3 is standard on the Model D with an option to upgrade to the PM4. The more expensive Model E always includes the PM4 with it as the primary performance monitor. The Model E sells for $350 more than the Model D based on which monitoring device you select.

The performance monitoring devices, PM3 and PM4, are sleek designs that provide the most important metrics for monitoring your heart rate and rowing stats. Your heart rate is monitored by a gadget that straps across your chest. There is no discomfort when using this sensor as it is very thin with an elastic spandex strap. I can tell you from my own experience that it will not even be thought of while you are rowing. This is also a wireless device, so that means there are no wires dangling off of you.

The Concept 2 design uses a flywheel assembly that you will use to create the resistance and simulate rowing. The flywheel is placed in a suitably designed housing for safety intents. You will find a mechanical resistance adjustment for harder or lighter rowing. There are also no concerns with noise because the overall rowing machine is virtually quiet during rowing. Since the flywheel is a lot like a fan, of course you can notice a gentle swirling sound. But it is much softer than any fan because you will not be producing the same amount of RPM's as a regular fan does. You could put this machine in just about any room and comfortably use it without creating noise.

Either performance monitor also gives you the chance you to watch different types of data about your rowing in real time. There are enough data types to meet the needs of either competitive rowers or someone who wants a great workout. Your specific needs will help you in determining what you want to keep track of and what is not so important. For instance, if you are a competitive rower, you will in all probability pay attention to different stats from other competitive rowers.
