Acne Home Remedies: What Works, What Doesn't

By James K. McHugh

A lot of people have acne as adolescents, but if you're encountering acne as an adult, you're not alone. Adult acne is a lot more common than you would believe. But a lot of people don't talk about it. What should you do if you're a grownup and you're experiencing acne? Most over the counter acne treatments are tough on your adult skin. That leads many adults to trying home remedies for acne.

Now, there are plenty of home remedies for acne out there; a number of them work, yet others are nothing more than old wive's tales. In order to help you choose the best do-it-yourself solution to help remedy your acne breakouts, let's first have a look at the ones that will work. Green tea and tea tree oil have both shown in studies to be effective at managing acne, and are available in a wide variety of skin treatment products.

Taking in a healthy diet has also demonstrated an ability to modestly help acne, specifically if you cut back on high glycemic index ingredients and dairy. Along with this, it's also advisable to increase your intake of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and water.

Certainly, you can also find acne home remedies that don't work, or at the minimum haven't been scientifically shown to work. Detox diets, for example, are getting to be quite popular over the last several years, and are expected to offer all sorts of health improvements, including doing away with acne.

But a majority of medical doctors point out that detox diets don't do nearly anything for the body; and certainly no research have been performed that prove detox diets can boost the appearance of your skin. So if you would like to try a detox diet, just to see if it will clear up your acne, at the very least speak with your medical doctor initially.

Along with detox diets, there's also a number of handmade recipes for peels, toners and masks which are expected to be able to help remedy acne. Some may work, but odds are many of them won't. So if you are fighting acne, it's best to skip the home remedies for acne that don't work, and stick to ones that have been proven to relieve acne.
