Warning Signs that You May Have a Yeast Infection

By Suzanne Hughes

It is not uncommon for a woman to feel some discomfort in the vaginal area. Very often, these are the clear signs of a yeast infection. However, it is imperative for a woman to know for a fact that that is what she is dealing with. For the first time around, it is important for her to get checked by a gynecologist to rule out any other problems. Below, discover the symptoms, the home remedies, ways to avoid it, and other treatments for this very common irritation.

From the beginning, there is usually an itch. Very often, women will not pay much attention to it but it becomes more intense over time. The more that one scratches, the worse the itching and inflammation will become. This is often accompanied by irritation of the vagina and the surrounding area. A thick white discharge is also very common, resembling cottage cheese. This discharge is free of any odor, however. Women will often feel a burning sensation while urinating and even in intercourse.

Quick treatment is what it is all about. Avoiding the issue altogether will not make it go away, and will only make things worse. Of course, prevention is the best thing, especially for those who have these recurring yeast infections. Bacteria lurks in hot baths and hot tubs, this will avoid them. Irritation can result from douching because an imbalance of the bacteria may occur, thus deterring use is recommended. Opt for breathable fabric like cotton, and never stay in wet clothing. After swimming, change into other clothes or a dry bathing suit.

Yeast grows in dark and moist areas and if you provide the perfect environment for it it could encourage this growth. Very often, an antibiotic therapy could cause yeast infections to develop. A good way to avoid this is to ensure you eat yogurt with live bacterial cultures each day or take acidophilus during the therapy.

Some women who suffer from recurring yeast infections should be consuming this type of yogurt daily. That means whether they are taking antibiotics or not. Yogurt can also be replaced by probiotic supplements.

Most women will treat their yeast infections with over-the-counter solutions. These usually include either anti-fungal creams, suppositories, or both. In some cases, some infections might be quite stubborn and can only be treated with prescription drugs.

However, one can also try to avoid such treatments which could over time, become quite expensive. A great way to do this is by applying yogurt with live bacterial cultures directly on the vaginal area and inserted into the vagina. Leave the yogurt in place for at least 15 minutes, doing this two or three times a day for three days.

Just as the over-the-counter medications will work within three days, so too should the yogurt remedy. However, if you prefer the drugstore or treatments, yogurt can still be utilized to provide relief from the itching and other discomfort.
