Work Through Bouts of Impotence with Viagra and Counseling

By Natalie Bonanski

If you suffer from impotence or erectile dysfunction, it might be relieving for you to know that you aren't alone! Close to 10 million men in the United States are suffering the effects of impotence or ED. If you're among those numbers, you should also know, however, that there are solutions.

The first step in getting treatment for your ED is to speak with your doctor. There is no reason to suffer from impotence. Speak up! You can't ignore the negative impacts the effects of ED could be having on your relationship and when you couple that with the fact that ED can effect you both physically as well as psychologically, it is something you need to address.

Becoming diagnosed is the first step in dealing with ED. Not all bouts of impotence have an underlying medical cause; there could be certain times in your life when you cannot sustain an erection. This could be caused by factors such as a rough time with your partner or a stressful time at work. Finding that you aren't able to sustain an erection sufficient enough for penetration or if you can't sustain your erection long enough to achieve sexual satisfaction more than 50 percent of the time means, however, that you need to schedule an appointment with your physician.

While you can certainly speak with your doctor about getting prescribed Viagra to treat the symptom and lack of erection, it is best to also speak to your doctor about whether there are underlying medical or psychological issues that are causing your bouts of impotence. If you're going through a level of high stress and work demands or if there are problems at home - unemployment or underemployment for example - you may need to simply work through these issues and, chances are, you'll find your ED clearing up. You and your doctor will work together to determine whether the underlying causes of your ED can be treated through counseling or whether you will be best served by taking Viagra.

Counseling is becoming a more and more prevalent way to treat impotence, either in conjunction with a medical regiment or on its own. Remember, you're not alone in dealing with your impotence, even though it is an embarrassing event to speak about in public. Consider too, that having a supportive partner can also help with addressing the issues of impotence and there are many doctors that offer counseling for couples as a way to work through bouts of ED.
