What To Do When A Person Is Sick Or Injured

By Dave Larsson

Being well-informed in a life and death situation can be the only thing that can help you save your life and someone else's. First aid is the first thing you can do to help someone who needs it especially if there are no hospitals near you or medical attention is not available at the moment.

First of all, always keep your first aid kit ready but when you store it, be sure that it is out of children's reach. Although it can help save lives, it can also help destroy lives especially if they are not used properly. It is important to get the proper training before trying to use this type of stuff.

Ask for help whenever you are in a situation like this, regardless of how embarrassed you might be. There is no better person to help you with than the professionals. Ask for a professional to help you but if there's none, then you need to do it by yourself with what you have learned from first aid training.

Do not give water or force an unconscious person to drink water. You might end up drowning or suffocating the person with the water. Once he is conscious and coherent, that is the time you should let him drink.

If a person has difficulty breathing, make sure that you help the person up into a comfortable position and let him breathe in and out deeply. There might be allergens that triggered his reaction and made him difficult to breathe. You need to get to the root of the problem as soon as you can to make sure it is fixed.

Wounds are messy to treat and they can be gross at times. But, the only way to stop the wound from bleeding is to handle it with care. Wash the area and clean it with soap and water. Do not try to take foreign objects out of the affected area or you might add insult to injury. Raise the injured part up to prevent massive circulation to the area.

When someone begins to feel sick and vomits a lot, phone the doctor immediately. And while waiting, position the patient somewhere near the bathroom so he can vomit. Assist him in any way you can. Slowly let the person sip water while waiting if he can take it. It is much better that you give him rehydrating solutions.

Heatstroke can be really deadly especially during the summer when the sun shines the hottest of the entire year. Remove the person under the sun and provide immediate fluid into his system. Cool him off as quickly as possible and get the doctor even if he feels okay.
