Restless Leg Treatment Is Important

By Maxwell Avenoso

If you find yourself unable to sleep at night because of the persistent pain in your legs, then you may be suffering from RLS or restless leg syndrome. This condition is characterized by aching, throbbing or tingling sensation on the leg. The sensation is often times more noticeable when the leg is at rest. People who have RLS feel the need to continuously move their legs in order to ease the discomfort.

There are no proven causes for this condition but experts believe that RLS may be a neurological disorder. The reason for this being caused could be due to instability in the dopamine levels, the substance that helps in transferring signals between the brain and the nerve cells. RLS is more likely to affect people with medical conditions such as diabetes, rheumatism or renal failure, or women who are pregnant, and may also be hereditary.

If you are experiencing RLS symptoms, then it is advisable to attend to it early on. RLS treatment may be simple enough to be done at home, especially if the condition is still at its early stage. The most effective way is to exercise the legs regularly. Simple walking and stretching exercises may help relax the leg and lessen the need to keep it moving.

Managing and being consistent with a healthy diet is a basic and quick cure for RLS Remember to get lots of protein since this is what muscles rely on for strength. Another preventative measure is to avoid foods or beverages loaded with caffeine. Coffee, tea, energy drinks and chocolates should be consumed moderately or not at all. It may help to also take supplements that contain iron, magnesium, and folate as well.

Probably, one of the most effective RLS treatment is to soak your legs in a warm tub of water for about 10 to 15 minutes every day. Putting a drop or two of aromatherapy oils infused with lavender or other plant extracts can also help in relaxing the restless leg. A bit of massage on the legs before going to sleep can also help ease the sensation and help you get a good night's sleep.

Also a good treatment is taking herbal medicines. Ginkgo biloba is probably one of the most effective herbal remedies as it works to increase the blood flow and strengthen the cell membranes. Signal transmissions to the brain are more effectively promoted this way. Valerian root may also be effective because of its natural sedating characteristics. Stress related ailments are usually treated with this. Ginseng, when compared to other herbal remedies that do the same thing, may be effective. Because it increases the body?s resistance to stress, it is universally known as a tonic for the entire body.

Treatments for RLS in the worse conditions can be treated with drugs like dopamine agonists, anticonvulsants or opiods. You should not take these medications without a prescription and they should be prescribed by a doctor only. It's OK to take pain relievers for minor aches and pains but don't get too dependent on them. If after having taken minimal amounts of the medicine your pain is still intolerable, it is best to consult a physician for alternative treatments.
