Undergoing RLS Treatment

By Herschel Kamler

When people feel crawling, burning or tingling sensations in their legs they are suffering from Restless legs syndrome or RLS. The uncomfortable feelings experienced are the characteristics of restless legs syndrome and to relieve oneself from the pain, there are RLS remedies available. Restless legs syndrome can be a precursor to other sickness like lung and kidney problems, Parkinson's disease, diabetes and other neurological diseases which is why it is suggested that people suffering from RLS should visit their doctor immediately or at least find remedies for RLS.

There are several RLS remedies that can be used by people suffering from RLS. First is by exercising regularly, avoiding exercising a few hours before going to sleep and avoid overexertion as well. When one is tired from too much work, this can also add to RLS. Self directed exercises are found welcoming by people suffering from RLS. Some of these include bending, walking, stretching, massaging, and jiggling the muscles. Walking slowly around the bedroom before going to sleep can also help relax your legs.

Relaxation is one of the remedies for RLS. It is best to lower the stress level by focusing on being organized and having a quiet time every day. Deep breathing exercises, yoga, and meditation are among the relaxation techniques that can be done regularly. The symptoms of RLS are usually triggered by too much stress, most often before bedtime. Using RLS remedies is helpful during this time.

RLS remedies such as heat and cold therapy can do wonders in alleviating the cramps and burning sensation in the legs. Soaking the feet in cold water can help. Do not overdo this kind of therapy using ice since it can cause damage to the nerves in the legs. For heat therapy, heat pads can be used on the legs. Keep in mind that long exposure to cold weather can also trigger the symptoms of RLS.

Another type of RLS remedies is drinking vitamins and herbs. Insufficient Vitamin B and iron and folate deficiency can also aggravate restless legs syndrome. To counter this, one can take calcium and magnesium supplements. Consulting an expert in Chinese Herbal Medicine will be beneficial for those who wish to use combination of herbs as RLS remedies. Among the common homeopathic remedies used to relieve RLS include Aconitum napellus, Acusticum, Rhus toxicodron, and Zincum metallicum.

Aside from these RLS remedies simple avoidance of stimulants that can aggravate restless legs syndrome is also important. Reducing intake of caffeine products will largely help in combating RLS. Quitting drinking and smoking can prove to be beneficial as well. According to a study done by the College of Medicine in the University of Kentucky showed that out of 1,800 men and women those that smoke are more likely to suffer from restless legs syndrome than those who don't.

Other helpful RLS remedies include, avoid eating large meals at night and taking medicine such as sleep-inducing medicine, and medicine for sinus and cold. Sleep-inducing medicine can provide good rest but in just a short time. Unfortunately, continuous intake of the medicine will cause the body to have high tolerance against it.
