Barber shops - the place for all men to go when they need a haircut

By Ashley Williams

Have you been avoiding your local hair salon, in fear that you'll get another bad hair cut? When you're a male, getting the right hair cut is quite important, as a bad one can not only result in taunts from your mates, but a lowered self esteem. But rather than letting your hair grow to become unmanageable, consider what options you have for ensuring you get the best hair cut available.

Finding the right person to cut your hair is important to ensuring a good air cut. While some may take recommendations from their loved one, mother or sister, this is probably not the best thing to do, as their hairdresser may do great female cuts, but not men's hair cuts. Many men may also find it an uncomfortable experience to visit a unisex hair salon, as the majority of the time it is packed full of chatty women and strong smells of colour product - not the ideal environment for men wanting a simple hair cut. However, don't give on getting a great hair cut - find a place that specialises in men's hair cuts.

Barbershops are the place to visit when you need to arrange a male hair cutting appointment. With men cutting men's hair, it is a comfortable and easy going place for all guys to go to. All barbers are trained mainly using hair clippers (as this is the main tool to cut men's hair with), as oppose to regular hairdressers who do a range of hair services, therefore never truly having one main 'area' of work.

As well we being a great place to escape to (to get away from the kids or partner), you can come into the barbershop, relax and have a good old yarn with your barber or with the person in the chair next to you - a much better environment than at the hair salon with chatty hairdressers talking about the latest gossip magazine.

Because barbers specialise in the cutting of men's hair, you can get an experienced and expert opinion on what is the best hair cut for you. As oppose to hair salons (where there is barely a picture of a men's hair cut picture in site), barbershops can offer a broad range of hair cutting ideas for you to browse through.

While some barbershops still offer 'razor shaves', it is becoming less commonly available. However, most barbers are still happy to do moustache and beard trims. At only a few dollars, why not treat yourself and have a professional groom your facial hair? You can avoid uneven cutting (by doing it yourself), sit back and relax while someone does it for you.

Barber shops are also the place to visit when you are looking for quality men's hair products. Not only will you be able to find out what the best product to use for your hair is, but the barber can also show you the correct application. There are also some barbers that sell ear and nose trimmers and hair clippers (if you prepare cutting your own hair).

So next time you are thinking about where to get your hair cut next, choose a salon that specialises in men's hair cuts. Not only will you get to avoid girly salons with chatty hairdressers, but you can get a great hair cut. Visit the barber shop yourself, go with a friend or make it a father and son activity for the day.
