Managing The Effects Of Extreme Stress

By Rico Donohoo

The ability to cope with extreme stress effectively will depend on the persons access to positive resources, innate abilities and awareness. We know that each person is different in regards to their own nature, strengths and personal challenges. The same experience can affect two people in totally different ways. With that thought, every person needs to be treated as a unique situation, because one approach for coping and recovering from stress while working for one person may not work for another. There are some certain approaches, considerations and general concerns that are good to know.

Let's look at the situation for a young adult still at home, and the parents do not have a positive relationship. Although of course they can't ease the situations, the teen or early teen may want to help and because they can't, it can create a whole range of negative emotions along with the extreme stress. In that situation, the teen needs to understand that he or she is not responsible for the behavior and choices of the parents. One of the best things to do is have the teen be removed when the parents are fighting. Leave and go somewhere that is positive and not stressful when it starts. The teen should try to do something that is positive in nature such as visiting a friend or going for a relaxing walk.

The potential for healing can come from the immense power of simple communication. You can set the stage that will allow real progress to be made by talking to others whom you know. Just plainly talking about the experience in what ever manner it comes out can be very helpful. Some people are reticent about doing that, so there are other methods. Writing down thoughts and talking about it on paper is another way to express ourselves. The need to just let it out is something that everyone can understand. During these times, it is not always important for people to say anything, just listen.

We know that extremely stressful events and the ability to cope with them can vary from person to person and it also relies on the type of event that happened. Reasonable recovery and the time it takes to achieve it, is dependent on the intensity of the trauma and the nature of any kind of loss. If a person has previous experience at overcoming stress, that can also play an important part in recovery. Those who have had experience with highly stressful situations and have handled them well will tend to take less time to cope and recover. This type of person has the learned tools needed to be able to deal with high or extreme stress.

There is a common thread through all this that concerns the ability to manage extreme stress. By a willingness to communicate, you will increase your ability to heal and cope successfully. Talking about the experience with empathetic listeners will help you immensely and will be worth your time.
