In the immediate aftermath one may be more dominate than the other. Understanding that these two reactions are natural responses that are created to offer protection to the individual is important. There are other points to think about that also concern dealing with extreme stress.

There are many situations with the potential to cause extreme stress, yet the situation itself is not catastrophic or acutely traumatic such as a disaster.

Some home environments can be habitually stressful which could cause extreme stress in its family members. Even if it is your parent that is the cause of your stress, you can help yourself if you understand that people always have a choice on how they are going to behave. In this situation, some positive approaches to dealing with it are through honest and open communication. A positive approach you might try is to sit down with your parents and talk to them about how their behavior makes you feel. If you felt comfortable doing so, you could even suggest some form of counseling.

If your child has suffered a traumatic and extremely stressful event, then you should immediately anticipate a reaction of some form. If you are unsure of what to expect, then you do need to contact a professional. Your family physician is someone you could talk to and who could offer guidance and recommendations. You child may exhibit common reactions to the trauma immediately or very soon after the event.

That is why you need to arrange professional guidance as soon as possible. Along with helping your child cope with the stress reactions, the trained psychologist will also help you learn to help your child through the ordeal.

You will find that coping with extreme stress may require several stages in order to realize effective healing. One way to cope is to understand that the stress reactions are causing a significant problem. At that point, the best course of action would be to either ask someone you trust for advice or initiate contact with a professional. It is likely the person you ask for advice will recommend the same course of action. After you talk with a trained professional counselor or psychologist, they will probably suggest further professional treatment.
