Managing The Effects Of Extreme Stress

The ability for any person to effectively cope with extreme stress will naturally depend on the person's innate abilities, awareness and any positive resources that are available. Of course every individual is different in regards to their own nature, strengths and personal challenges. The same experience can affect two people in totally different ways. Each individual must be thought of as a unique situation because one approach to recovering and coping with stress might not work with everyone. It is still useful to know about some kinds of approaches, considerations and general concerns.

There are all types of situations that can create extreme stress, it isn't exclusive to traumatic or catastrophic events.

It is difficult to outline any universal form of treatment that will help a person deal with extreme stress. Everything depends on what event happened to create the stress. It also depends on whether events are considered to be higher or lower on the stress scale with individuals. Perhaps for an individual, the extreme stress may result in excessive feelings of fear. One regrettable aspect is that it can take a very long time to overcome the fear, or the person may never completely conquer it. Extreme stress and the variety of reactions it can produce is why it is such a complicated issue. In any situation, we feel the best action is to seek qualified, professional counseling.

A different but effective strategy in general, is adopting healthy and positive behaviors. This will make the person stronger and give them better coping skills to deal with extreme stress and trauma. Eating healthy, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep are positive lifestyle behaviors that are included in this kind of strategy. There are many choices that can be taken advantage of, and a couple of alternatives could be yoga, meditation and other effective techniques for relaxation.

Awareness can be a tool that you can use to your advantage in the event you undergo an extremely stressful situation. Some people will be at greater risk at having poor coping skills because they haven't taken the time to think about possible reactions and consequences to what has happened. You have the power to help yourself through self-education or by getting advice from a professional.
