Important Priorities When Dealing With Extreme Stress

There are many instances when people find themselves dealing with extreme stress. There are also many situations that can happen that will create high stress levels and anxiety. One example is when a disaster occurs, and that is a kind of situation that can create large amounts of stress. Some of the more common reactions to those events are strong denial and symptoms of shock. One or the other may arise more quickly immediately after the event. Understanding that these two reactions are natural responses that are created to offer protection to the individual is important. Let's explore some more points as they concern dealing with extreme stress.

Extreme stress can arise from many situations, it doesn't just happen during catastrophic or acutely traumatic events.

It is understood that people are varied in their ability to cope with extremely stressful events and it also depends on the type of event. The intensity of the trauma as well as the nature of any possible loss will determine the length of time it will take for a reasonable recovery. The experience a person has with enduring stress can also play a vital role here. A person who has experienced highly stressful situations in the past and learned to deal with it successfully will take less time to cope and recover. This type of person has the learned tools needed to be able to deal with high or extreme stress.

There are positive ways for an adult who is dealing with an unusually extreme stress situation to overcome it. You are not at a loss in terms of retaining some degree of control over your life. The first thing to realize is you may have certain emotions that may be unusually intense in how they feel. Because of the nature of the stress,you could find yourself having stress reactions to normal situations. Accepting what has happened as well as learning what types of reactions you might have is important. So that you can understand what is happening inside you, awareness is very important.

The approach to dealing with extreme stress is very different when dealing with children, teens or adults. All age categories and especially young children would benefit from professional treatment. Depending on the nature of the trauma, there may need to be ongoing long term support for adults and teens as well. A personal support system made up of family and good friends can be extremely beneficial helping in recovery no matter what kind of case.
