Viewing Interracial Relationships In Books

By Faye Nelson

Life is filled with many stressors in the busy world of today. From stressful jobs to high gasoline prices, people are always finding negative aspects about their lives that give them headaches and pain. Problems in a relationship adds additional stress that is best avoided. Dealing with interracial relationships can make it even more difficult.

There are no manuals or how-to books on this issue but there are books that help people understand why others act the way they do and how to handle the feelings that are brought to the surface because of it. When people of two different races get together in a relationship, they may be blind to the fact that they are not of the same race.

Very often, two people who are in love do not see ethnicity, color or race differences. They see only the value in the other person and the positive aspects that make them love that person. Those people on the outside of the relationship are rarely taken in by the sincerity of feelings or the genuineness of the love that is felt.

Some of the helping books that have been published counsel young couples in this kind of relationship on how to react to those who have a problem with it. Others teach the couple about culture differences, ethical implications and how to maintain a healthy relationship while incorporating the differences to make a solid union.

Relatives and family members like to see a supposed outsider learning more about their culture. Some will react with fear and trepidation while others will welcome the new member of the family with open arms. It is important to show a willingness to learn and to be fair and open-minded.

Interracial relationships are notoriously difficult. Two people who choose this kind of relationship must be strong and should prepare themselves for what others might say. If they can withstand a little pressure and have armed themselves with the tools they need to confront negativism, they have a good chance at a successful relationship.
